What is AMPS?
AMPS stands for Administrative Monetary Penalty System. It is an alternative to court for handling certain municipal contraventions. Administered under provincial regulations, AMPS offers an efficient way to resolve matters with no court appearance required.

Understanding AMPS
Why is the Town using AMPS? |
AMPS allows matters to be handled locally and efficiently. It helps reduce pressure on the court system and offers residents a faster, simpler alternative for resolving contraventions. |
What's the difference between a Penalty Notice and a Penalty Order? |
A Penalty Notice is issued for local by-law violations. A Penalty Order is issued for camera-detected traffic violations under the Highway Traffic Act. |
Who can receive a Penalty Notice? |
Penalty Notices are issued to either the individual responsible for the contravention. |
Who can receive a Penalty Order? |
A Penalty Ordered is issued to the vehicle owner, regardless of if they were the one operating the vehicle when the offence was made. They can be issued in person or via mail. |
Payments and Fees
How do I pay a Penalty Notice or Penalty Order? |
You can pay: Online: Pay your penalty online at caledon.ca/amps 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Online payments will be subject to a processing fee. By mail: Write the Penalty Notice number on the cheque or money order (payable to the Town of Caledon) and mail it to the below address. Note: Do not send cash in the mail. Allow sufficient mailing time. Town of Caledon – AMPS 6311 Old Church Road Caledon, ON L7C 1J6 In person: Visit Service Caledon at Town Hall (6311 Old Church Road). Open Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays) from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tip: If you miss the deadline, the penalty is affirmed and becomes a debt to the Town. |
Can I get a discount if I pay early? |
Yes. For eligible Penalty Notices, a 25% discount is available if payment is made within 15 days of receipt. Penalty Orders do not qualify for early payment discounts. |
What happens if I don’t pay on time? |
A Late Payment Fee of $20 may be applied. Additional administrative fees may apply. The penalty may also be added to your property taxes or reported to the Ministry of Transportation, which can block vehicle permit renewal. |

Disputes and Appeals
Can I dispute a Penalty Notice? |
Yes. You may request a Screening Review within 30 days of the Effective Date of Service. |
Can I appeal a Penalty Order? |
Yes. You may request a Screening Appeal within 30 days of the Effective Date of Service. |
What if I miss the deadline to request a Screening? |
You may request an extension of time (up to 30 days after the deadline). If no extension is granted:

Can someone else represent me at a review or hearing? |
Yes. Authorized representatives (such as a lawyer, paralegal or family member) may act on your behalf. Complete the Authorization to Act as an Agent Form in advance and submit it to amps@caledon.ca. |
Is the decision of a Hearing Officer final? |
Yes. Once a Hearing Officer makes a decision it is final and binding. |
How long does it take for a decision to be made? |
Screening and Hearing Officers must issue decisions as soon as practicable after the review. You will primarily be notified through the online portal where you submitted your dispute or appeal, along with an email notification. In certain cases, the Screening or Hearing Officer may also choose to send the decision by mail or courier. |
What should I have with me or upload for my screening or hearing appeal/review? |
You will need to explain the reasons for disputing the penalty notice or order. While you are not required to provide evidence, please note that the screening or hearing officer can only make a decision based on the information presented to them. Submit copies of any documents that may assist as evidence.

Vehicle Responsibility
What if I receive a Penalty Order but wasn’t driving the vehicle? |
Penalty Orders are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, even if someone else was driving at the time of the offence. |
