Grow Ops and Clandestine Labs

The Town of Caledon keeps a list of locations where illegal marijuana grow operations (grow ops) and clandestine drug labs were confirmed by the Ontario Provincial Police and inspected by our Building Services Division.

Grow ops and clandestine labs can be in any location or building, from rural farms to subdivision houses. They create health and safety concerns for future owners and residents.

If you know of any locations where illegal marijuana grow ops and clandestine drug lab activity is happening, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Inspections

We inspect and issue Unsafe Order(s) and Prohibit Occupancy Order(s) that direct the owner of the building to take the required action(s) to make the building safe for future use.

Often there are structural, electrical and mechanical changes to the building, which can include:

  • Cutting large unsupported openings in doors and walls, which make the building structurally unsafe
  • Illegally bypassing the hydro meter to get large quantities of electricity for artificial lighting
  • Significant alterations to the heating and ventilation system to create heat and mask odours

Environmental damage

The increased temperature and humidity can often lead to mould growth over a short period of time. This occurs not only on ceilings, walls and floors, but also inside walls, insulation, attics and air ducts.
