Black History Month: Honouring Black History, Culture and Community Impact

January 30, 2026 - (CALEDON, ON) – To celebrate Black History Month, several events will take place throughout Caledon, recognizing the achievements and contributions of Black communities and innovators.

“Black History Month provides an important moment to honour the stories, leadership and lasting contributions of Black communities, while deepening our collective understanding of the past and present,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “I invite residents to participate in local events that celebrate Black history and recognize the vital role Black Canadians have played in building our nation.”

Celebrate Black History Month with us as we come together to learn, connect, and honor the stories that matter. This event shines a light on Black excellence, resilience, and creativity while fostering conversation and community around the past, present, and future. Come celebrate history, inspire the future, and uplift voices that continue to shape our world.

No. 2 Construction Battalion Presentation

Captain (ret’d) Kevin Junor will be giving a presentation and interactive Q&A from 12-1 p.m., exploring the history, service, and legacy of the No. 2 Construction Battalion in World War I, veterans and serving members.

The African Inventors and Icons Exhibition

This interactive mobile exhibition, hosted by the Canadian Multicultural Inventors Museum (CMIM) teaches visitors about the contributions Africans have made throughout history. The exhibit showcases innovators of African descent from Europe, the United Kingdom, Africa, the Caribbean, North America, Central America and South America, and Oceania.

Keeping Records Panel Talk with artist Debbie Ebanks

Led by multidisciplinary artist Debbie Ebanks, members of the community whose voices are reflected in The Stories We Share and the Light We Carry exhibition will come together for a thoughtful dialogue on cultural memory and how knowledge is passed down through generations within Black communities.

The panel will explore why preserving community records matters, how individuals are already protecting their personal and collective histories, and what to know when considering donating materials to archives.

This free event is presented in partnership with Brampton Library. Space is limited, so advance registration is recommended.

Library Programs

Caledon Public Library will feature Black History Month book and collection displays at its three main branches: Albion Bolton, Caledon East, and Southfields Village. The Town’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program, developed in 2021, guides efforts in fostering all cultures and communities that call Caledon home. This February and beyond, the Town of Caledon reaffirms its commitment to celebrating Black culture, providing educational opportunities to staff, recognizing Black history, amplifying Black voices and celebrating the lives of Black Canadians.
