Town of Caledon welcomes Canada – Ontario partnership to accelerate housing supply and affordability

March 30, 2026 - (CALEDON, ON) – The Town of Caledon is welcoming today’s announcement from the Governments of Canada and Ontario on a landmark partnership to invest in affordable housing, infrastructure, and transit, highlighting how Caledon’s proactive planning has positioned the municipality to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Through a cost-matched investment totaling $8.8 billion over the next 10 years, both levels of government will fund critical housing-enabling infrastructure projects. A central component of this initiative is a coordinated effort to significantly reduce municipal development charges (DCs), helping lower the cost of building new homes.

“Today’s announcement is a major step forward in tackling the housing crisis and Caledon is ready,” said Mayor Annette Groves, Town of Caledon. “Council’s decision in 2024 to proactively rezone lands for nearly 35,000 homes reflects the foresight needed to meet the demands of a growing community. By taking a holistic approach to planning, well ahead of today’s announcement, we have positioned Caledon to be truly shovel-ready and able to immediately leverage this historic investment.”

Under the agreement, municipalities could reduce development charges by up to 50 per cent for a three-year period in municipalities representing approximately 80 per cent of Ontario’s population. Municipal governments will play a key role in supporting these reductions, ensuring that all three levels of government are aligned in their efforts to increase housing supply.

The initiative aligns with the Town’s “Future Caledon” Official Plan, ensuring that growth is carefully managed while infrastructure and services keep pace.
