Town of Caledon observes National Day of Mourning
April 28, 2026 (CALEDON) – Earlier today at Town Hall, members of Council, Town staff and residents came together to observe a moment of silence in recognition of the National Day of Mourning, held each year on April 28.
“The Day of Mourning is a time to reflect on and honour those who have been injured or lost their lives in the workplace,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “As a municipality, we remain committed to strengthening workplace safety, including through our participation in the WSIB Health and Safety Excellence Program, which helps guide continuous improvement and the prevention of future tragedies.”
A lot of work is being done to make workplaces safer, with 83,469 fewer accepted claims for work-related injuries or disease in Canada in 2024, according to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada. Unfortunately, there were 1,042 workplace fatalities in 2024, with 25 of those being young workers aged 15-24.
From 2020 to 2025 the Town of Caledon has had zero workplace fatalities and zero convictions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
For every worker tragedy there are loved ones, family and friends who are impacted. The National Day of Mourning provides an opportunity to not only remember the workers impacted, but their family and friends.
