Town of Caledon certified as a Bird friendly City by Nature Canada
CALEDON, ON (May 5, 2026) – The Town of Caledon is proud to announce it has been officially certified as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada, recognizing the municipality’s leadership in bird conservation, habitat protection, and community engagement.
This national designation is awarded to municipalities that meet rigorous standards across three key areas: threat reduction, habitat protection and restoration, and community outreach and education. Caledon’s certification reflects a coordinated, community-wide effort supported by Council, staff, local organizations, and residents.
“This designation reflects Caledon’s commitment to protecting our natural environment and the wildlife that depend on it,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “Becoming a Bird Friendly City is the result of ongoing collaboration between Council, staff, community partners and residents who care about preserving the landscapes that make Caledon unique."
On January 28, 2025, Council passed a Motion directing staff to apply for Bird Friendly City status and committed to ongoing action, including annual reporting, continued program development, and support for a community-led Bird Team. Since then, Caledon has implemented and advanced a range of initiatives that contributed to achieving certification.
Caledon’s success is rooted in strong environmental policies and programs that reduce threats to bird populations. These include encouraging the development community to implement bird-friendly building design through the development application review process, dark-sky lighting measures to reduce light pollution, and animal control by-laws that limit free-roaming cats. The Town is also enhancing its delivery of education and outreach to residents on preventing window collisions and protecting wildlife.
Bird Friendly City certification requires continuous improvement. The Town will submit regular progress reports to Nature Canada and pursue renewal in accordance with program requirements.
