The Town of Caledon observes National Day of Mourning

April 28, 2025 (CALEDON) –Today, the Town of Caledon Council, staff and residents gathered at Town Hall to pause and observe a moment of silence to honour the National Day of Mourning, an important day that takes place annually on April 28.

“The Day of Mourning is a day where we honour and remember workers who were injured or lost their lives in workplace accidents,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “It’s vital that we renew our commitment to safe workplaces and ensure that workplace tragedies are mitigated and prevented.”

A lot of work is being done to make workplaces safer, with 74,725 fewer accepted claims for work-related injuries or disease in Canada in 2023, according to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada. Unfortunately, there were 1,057 workplace fatalities in 2023, with 29 of those being young workers aged 15-24.

From 2020 to 2025 the Town of Caledon has had zero workplace fatalities and zero convictions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

For every worker tragedy there are loved ones, family and friends who are impacted. The National Day of Mourning provides an opportunity to not only remember the workers impacted, but their family and friends.
