Public Information Centre: Detailed Design - Alton Roads Main Street North and Queen Street West

THE PROJECT: The Town of Caledon has initiated the detailed design for the reconstruction of Main Street North and Queen Street West in the Village of Alton. The detailed design builds on the preferred plan identified in the completed 2022 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA). The proposed improvements include:

• Reconstructing the roadway with appropriate urban and rural cross sections, including improved lane and shoulder widths.
• Adding or upgrading sidewalks and active transportation facilities (e.g., sidewalks, paved shoulders, shared cycling/vehicle lanes) to improve walking and cycling connections.
• Rehabilitating the Shaw’s Creek Bridge on Main Street, including improvements to the deck, sidewalk, and parapet/railings.
• Improving drainage and stormwater management, including upgraded ditches, culverts, and storm sewers to address ponding and erosion.
• Enhancing the streetscape and landscaping to support the village character and improve the public realm along the main corridor.
• Refining the parking strategy in the Village core, including upgrades to the Queen Street West municipal parking lot and formalized on street parking near businesses.
• Updating street lighting in the urban sections with heritage style fixtures and more consistent, lower-level illumination to balance safety with Alton’s village character.

PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #1: The first of two Public Information Centres (PICs) will be held to share information on existing conditions and the proposed detailed design, and to receive input from the public. The PIC will be an informal “Open House” with materials on display and members of the project team on hand to answer questions. Presentation materials will be available online after the PIC.
