Notice of Intention to Designate: 7236 Castlederg Sideroad
TAKE NOTICE that the Town of Caledon intends to designate 7236 Castlederg Sideroad as being of cultural heritage value or interest under Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter O.18.
The property is located on the north side of Castlederg Sideroad Road midway between Centreville Creek Road and The Gore Road, forming a portion of the southwest section of Lot 16 Concession 3, within the geographic Township of Albion, Town of Caledon.
The design and physical value of the property at 7236 Castlederg Sideroad relates to its late 19th - early 20th century gable-roof bank barn, a representative example of the Central Ontario barn style popularized in Ontario during the latter half of the 19th century. Indicative of the shift towards mixed-use agriculture in this period, the barn is characterized by its rectangular plan and two storey structure, which accommodated livestock in the lower stone foundation and crop storage in the spacious three-bay, timber framed upper level. The barn is built into the site’s natural slope, allowing exterior access to the upper level by an earth ramp. Of particular note is the use of milled timbers in the superstructure and the unique ‘stepped’ layout of the vertical board cladding, which extends down to meet the individual window and door lintels in the stone foundation.
The historical or associative value of the property is found in its association with successive generations of the Allen family, who were among the early Scottish settlers in Albion Township. The barn is believed to have been constructed for John C. Allen who took over the property in 1889, with later alterations to the stable and livestock areas likely undertaken in the mid-20th century by his son, John A. Allen.
The property has contextual value for being physically, visually and historically linked to its surroundings. Set well back from the road in a prominent position on the property, the barn remains a visual reminder of the former agricultural use of the surrounding landscape. The property is also historically linked to the Allen family’s primary farmstead on the west half of Lot 15, Concession 6, Albion, now known as 14905 Duffy’s Lane.
