Notice of Intention to Designate: 12891 Hurontario Street
TAKE NOTICE that the Town of Caledon intends to designate 12891 Hurontario Street as being of cultural heritage value or interest under Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter O.18.
The property is located on the southeast corner of Hurontario Street and Old School Road, forming a portion of the west half of Lot 22 Concession 1 EHS, within the geographic Township of Chinguacousy, Town of Caledon.
Built c.1888-1891, the brick dwelling at 12891 Hurontario Street has design or physical value as a representative example of an Italianate style farmhouse. Italianate elements include its square, two storey massing, hip roof, paired modillions, and symmetrical fenestration with segmentally arched voussoirs. The red brick cladding is laid in stretcher bond, indicating that the house is likely of frame construction with a brick veneer. Historic photographs of the front façade confirm that the original first storey windows were identical in size and style to the second storey windows and that an Edwardian style front porch had been added to the farmhouse, likely in the first decade of the 20th century.
The historical or associative value of the farmhouse is linked to the Newhouse family. Family patriarch Anthony Newhouse, baptized Antoine Maissoneuve in Laval Quebec in 1792, anglicized his name upon moving to Chinguacousy Township in 1819 with his wife Susannah, where they settled on what is now known as Kennedy Road. The property at 12891 Hurontario Street was purchased by their son Cornelius in 1881, however, the farmhouse was most likely constructed by their grandson, John Newhouse. John was a prominent local politician in the late 19th and early 20th century. He served as a member of Chinguacousy Township Council for twenty years, holding the posts of deputy reeve and reeve, and was also instrumental in the installation of Chinguacousy Township’s local telephone system and the improvement of its roadways.
The farmhouse holds contextual value for its role in defining, maintaining, and supporting the rural agricultural character of the area, which is now transitioning to suburban residential land use. It is historically linked to Anthony and Susannah Newhouse’s former farmstead at 13030 Kennedy Road, approximately one kilometre northeast of the property.
