Town of Caledon hosting interactive mobile museum in recognition of Black History Month

CALEDON, ON (January 29, 2024) – In honour of Black History Month, the Town of Caledon is pleased to present an interactive mobile museum hosted by the Canadian Multicultural Inventors Museum. The mobile museum will feature innovators of African descent and a range of African inventions, including the window cleaner, the eggbeater, the space shuttle retrieval, and more.

Residents are encouraged to visit the interactive mobile museum on display from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the following locations over the month of February:

  • Saturday, February 3 – Caledon East Community Complex
  • Saturday, February 10 – Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness 
  • Monday, February 19 (Family Day) – Humber River Centre
  • Saturday, February 24 – Southfields Community Centre

"In celebrating our vibrant community in Caledon and honoring Black History Month, the Town is delighted to collaborate with the Canadian Multicultural Inventors Museum to present an engaging mobile museum showcasing the achievements of African innovators and their inventions. I invite everyone to visit one of our recreation facilities and explore the fascinating inventions and rich history on display,” commented Mayor Annette Groves. “While February marks Black History Month, let us remain committed to acknowledging and appreciating Black culture in Canada year-round. It is essential to perpetuate awareness of significant cultural initiatives and address important social topics continuously."

There are two information sessions taking place in February as part of Black History Month – Roots Community Services – Wellness and Community Information Session, and the Anti-Black Racism and Systemic Discrimination Collective.

Roots Community Services- Wellness and Community Information Session: 

Roots Community Services Inc. provides culturally relevant programs and services to inspire and empower individuals, primarily from the Black, African and Caribbean communities, to make positive changes in their lives and within their communities.

  • Date: February 20 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Location: Southfields Community Centre 

The Anti-Black Racism and Systemic Discrimination Collective

Guest Speaker: Angela Carter, Executive Director, Roots Community Services

  • Date: February 27 at 6:30 p.m .
  • Location: Humber River Centre – Room C

The Town’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program, developed in 2021, guides efforts in fostering all cultures and communities that call Caledon home. The staff-led Diversity Equity and Inclusion Roundtable have also been working to provide social and educational opportunities to Town staff such as lunch and learns, documentary screenings, webinars and more.

This February and beyond, the Town of Caledon reaffirms our commitment to celebrating Black culture, providing educational opportunities to staff, recognizing Black history, amplifying Black voices and celebrating the lives of Black Canadians.
