Traffic Calming makes Caledon roads safe

May 18, 2023 (CALEDON) –  The Town of Caledon recently completed a traffic calming project on Dougall Avenue to slow down traffic and create a safer environment.

Enhanced line marking narrows the travel lane on Dougall Avenue, with a new Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) at the intersection of Dougall Avenue and Tundra Road which will be completed shortly.

“It’s crucial to prioritize traffic safety to protect the lives and well-being of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “I am pleased to see this improvement in traffic safety and driving behaviors in Caledon to help prevent tragedies.”

Lane widths on Dougall Avenue were narrowed by painting lines closer together to influence driver perception and lower vehicle speeds. This is one of many efficient and scientific ways to slow down traffic in traffic engineering.

“Traffic calming on Town roads is an extensive data-driven process that involves evaluation, data collection and traffic analysis and is used where the majority of motorists are driving inappropriately,” said Arash Olia, Manager, Transportation Engineering. “When traffic calming is used drivers are more likely to lower their speed to steer more accurately and with greater concentration.”

Another safety measure is the new pedestrian crossover (PXO) at the intersection of Dougall Avenue and Tundra Road. PXO is a designated crossing area that allows pedestrians to safely cross the road where vehicles must yield to the pedestrian. Pedestrian crossovers are identified by specific pavement markings, crossing signs and electronic push-bottom flashers. This work will be completed shortly.
