Town of Caledon issues Open Air Fire Ban

June 1, 2023 (CALEDON, ON) – Effective Friday, June 2, 2023, at 8 a.m., the Fire Hazard Rating for Caledon will be raised to Extreme. As a result, a temporary open air fire ban will be in effect in the Town of Caledon until further notice.

This ban applies to all agricultural and open air fires, including recreational fires, as defined in By-law 2016-092 - Open Air, Recreational and Agricultural.

The lack of precipitation and extremely dry conditions combined means firefighting operations on grass, brush, bush and outdoor fires could be extremely dangerous for firefighters and may place properties at a high risk of loss. Should a fire start, it would spread quickly and be difficult to control.

The ban is issued according to the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and the Ontario Fire Code. Any violations could result in a minimum fine of $245 and a minimum invoice of $671.56 per fire truck per hour for all firefighting costs, minimum one hour charge plus clean up fees and a 15 per cent administration fee.
