Town of Caledon gets action on traffic safety concerns

CALEDON, ON (July 11, 2025) – Peel Regional Council unanimously approved two motions to improve traffic safety on regional roads in Caledon. They also received a community petition from the resident-led Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy Group (CCRSA) to accelerate planned improvements on Highway 50 and Coleraine Road south of Caledon.

The Town of Caledon declared a road safety emergency in October 2024. The motions follow recent motions at the Town of Caledon to encourage the Region of Peel to expand its partnership with the Town to reduce the risk and severity of collisions on municipal roads. The petition follows a CCRSA presentation to Regional Council on June 26, 2025.

“Lives will be saved on Caledon roads through the actions taken at the Peel Regional Council,” said Mayor Annette Groves, Town of Caledon. “I want to thank the CCRSA and Town of Caledon’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee as well as our Regional Council colleagues from Brampton and Mississauga and the community for recognizing and supporting these important initiatives.”

With the first motion, Peel Regional Council designated Coleraine Drive/Emil Kolb Parkway as a Community Safety Zone from Ellwood Drive West to De Rose Avenue in Bolton. This section of road is intersected by Harvest Moon Drive where a fatal collision in September 2024 sparked the formation of the CCRSA and the Town of Caledon’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee.

Community Safety Zones are recognized under provincial legislation and have strict speed limits and increased fines. The implementation of this new Community Safety Zone will happen this summer.

The second motion directed Peel to include a fully signalized intersection (traffic light) at Airport Road and Walker Road in Caledon East as part of upcoming reconstruction work (2025-28). The original reconstruction included a signal operated pedestrian crossover. Caledon Council passed a motion earlier this week to pay for the cost difference between the two signals to ensure enhanced safety for vulnerable residents, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The traffic light will be installed when road work in downtown Caledon East is complete.

Peel Regional Council also supported a motion to immediately install a permanent traffic signal at Mayfield Road and Snellview Boulevard to replace the temporary signal at that location. This motion supports residents of both Caledon and Brampton.

In addition, Council also supported a front-end financing agreement with the developer which will pay for 85% of the cost to improve Dixie Road north of Mayfield Road. This work will include measures to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in this important industrial area.
