Change your clocks. Change your batteries.

March 11, 2022 – Clocks will spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on March 13 this year and Caledon Fire and Emergency Services is urging residents to install new batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks.

“For smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to work properly and sound the alarm, batteries need to be replaced regularly,” explained Fire Chief Dave Forfar. “This year, Ontario has lost 21 people in the month of January to fatal fires. One of the best ways to ensure your family is safe is to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.”

To survive a fire, you need an early warning and must know what to do when the smoke alarms sound. Working smoke alarms are required on every floor of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it’s recommended to also install smoke alarms inside all bedrooms.

“In a fire, seconds can make the difference between life and death," said Forfar. "Almost half of all home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Home smoke alarms can alert people to the presence of toxic smoke and give everyone an opportunity to get out alive."

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.  Carbon Monoxide is an odourless, colourless and poisonous gas that causes flu like symptoms. Having working alarms can alert you to the presence of this deadly gas in your home.
