Cultural Heritage Landscapes
A Cultural Heritage Landscape, as defined in the Ontario Provincial Policy Statement, can include:
- buildings
- structures
- spaces
- views
- archaeological sites or natural elements that are valued together
Once an area is designated as a Cultural Heritage Landscape it is recognized in the Official Plan which in turn influences future development in Caledon.
Criteria for identification
To be designated a Cultural Heritage Landscape the following criteria must be met:
- It must not have been altered or modified by humans
- It must connect with major historic themes that have shaped the area, and
- It must have historic significance.
Extensive research and oral history is conducted to determine the historic significance of an area.
