Caledon seeks input on Regional Government Review

Regional Government Review

Town of Caledon Council is urging Caledon residents to have their say about the current provincial review of municipal government in Peel region.

“Caledon is a distinctive mix of rural and urban and a key player in providing services and infrastructure to residents,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “In this time of change we need to ensure that our residents have a voice and that the province understands our special perspective on these issues.”

During its April 30th meeting, Council approved a motion to launch a public engagement strategy to seek residents’ feedback. The motion also called for a Special Council meeting to be scheduled immediately following the approval of an independent financial review commissioned by the Region of Peel. The date for this meeting will be announced at a future time.

As part of the public engagement strategy, the Town is launching an online survey at caledon.ca/advocacy. The survey asks residents to rank the importance of factors such as cost, efficiency, size of government and access to services. It invites them to make suggestions about improving the way municipal government is structured, how decisions are made and how services are delivered. (The survey closes May 16 at 11:59 p.m.)

In addition to the survey, a series of “Coffee with Council” sessions are planned for the following two Saturdays (May 4 and 11) throughout Caledon.

About the Provincial Government Review

The Province is reviewing the governance, decision-making, and service delivery functions of selected regional governments and their lower-tier municipalities. The Region of Peel and its lower-tier municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga are included in this review.

Mayor Thompson and CAO Mike Galloway met with the Special Advisors leading the provincial review on February 8, 2019 to highlight Caledon’s important economic and environmental role in Peel region.  And in March, when the province opened up its review to public consultation, the Mayor urged citizens to get involved by submitting feedback either by email or via the province’s online survey. On May 8 Mayor Thompson will be delegating the provincial review in person as part of a series of meetings with the Special Advisors.
