May 20, 2021 – Tuesday May 18 at General Committee the Caledon Town Council supported the Age-Friendly Caledon (AFC) Action Plan which outlines policies, programs, services and spaces that help residents maintain their independence as they age. This Action Plan identifies ways to provide older adults with the tools they need to live safely, enjoy good health and stay actively involved in their community.

“Our older adult population is so incredibly important to us," said Mayor Allan Thompson. "This is why we've taken great pride in preparing the AFC action plan which will create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community that celebrates all residents, regardless of age.”

Caledon will have nearly 10,000 more older adult residents (age 55 and over) in the next 10 years. To address this major demographic shift, the AFC Action Plan is comprised of 45 action items to help remove barriers that impact residents’ ability to connect with the people, places and services that make Caledon a great place live.

Older Adult Housing Options

To demonstrate their commitment to the recommendations in the AFC Action Plan, Town Council directed staff to look into older adult housing options including land located in the southern portion of Caledon East, south of Valewood Drive on the east side of Airport Road, for the potential development of older adult housing.

Recommendations will be included in the final report for Council consideration. Caledon Town Hall, Caledon East Community Complex and the soccer fields behind Town Hall would not be altered.

Seniors Month

Seniors month is an annual celebration that is observed across Canada in honor of our seniors and older adults during the month of June. We encourage all of our older residents to stay active.

The Town of Caledon and local community support agencies have partnered up to offer a variety of COVID-safe, engaging, and FREE activities for our older residents to participate in. These activities are being offered as self-guided, virtual or outdoor with accessibility accommodations to encourage participation.

“I’d also like to thank our Seniors Task Force, who have been invaluable in their guidance and direction during the development of the AFC Action Plan,” continued Mayor Thompson. “I look forward to their continued support when it comes to implementing steps to make the plan a reality.”
