With a motto of "We scoop smiles!" the appropriately named, Happy Days Ice Cream Parlour opened for the season on schedule despite the pandemic. We asked owners James and Tammy Jenkins to tell us a little about their business and why they do what they do.

Tell us about your business.

My wife Tammy and I wanted to start a new venture and bought Happy Days in March 2012. Happy Days originally opened in May 2008. We are the second owners.

We offer 32 flavours of hard ice cream which we try to change periodically to keep everyone happy! People can order any way they like whether it's in a cup or on a cone (regular or waffle). We have a variety of sizes including our 1 litre hand-packed take home tubs.

We also offer some specialty items such as milkshakes, sundaes, Pop Shoppe floats, Affogatto (espresso poured over ice cream), and frozen yogurt.

Tell us about you, why are you in this business?

Happy Days is a second job for both Tammy and I, it is a seasonal business open from Easter to Thanksgiving. It keeps us very busy but we absolutely love running Happy Days!

Every year when we open for the season, we look forward to seeing how much taller our regular customers have grown over the winter.  Over the years we have gotten to know some great customers, some of which have become good friends and neighbours.

We are so thankful for all the support from the community as well as our loyal customers.

Do you have a favourite flavor?

Our ice cream supplier is a family run business in Peterborough, called Central Smith. We personally do not have just one favorite because they are all delicious!

Our best sellers are Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.  This year Central Smith has created some new flavours: Hershey’s Eggies, Monster Cookie, Chocolate Salty Caramel which all have gone over well with our customers!

How have you adjusted your business model due to the pandemic?

COVID has pushed us to update with the current times.  We now accept contactless payment and have a special “Take Out” window installed at our front door. Unfortunately, we have had to reduce our closing time to 8:00pm to conform with the current province wide lockdown guidelines for non-essential take out.

What are you most looking forward to when we get past the pandemic restrictions?

Our motto is “We Scoop Smiles”.  Let's all do our part and hopefully we can see all these beautiful smiles once again!!
