Rental License Program

The Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Program is designed to protect the health, safety and rights of tenants by addressing concerns such as overcrowding, illegal units and poor property maintenance. 

Who needs a license? 

If you provide Short-Term Rental Accommodations, you require a license. This includes homes rented for less than 28 days, up to 6 months (180 nights) a year and are the primary residence of the renter. 

You don’t need a license if you run a hotel, motel, group home, or student housing that has gone through the proper site plan approval process with the Town’s Planning department.

Who can apply?

Before applying, be aware of the following requirements: 

  • A property owned by a corporation cannot be granted a short-term rental license 

  • The accommodation and operator's primary residence must be the same 

  • No owner of a property may have more than one short-term rental accommodation 

License fees 

Short Term Rental License

Introductory rates are available for a limited time following program launch to provide a simple transition into the new system: 

  • Introductory fee until November 6, 2026 - $250 

  • Fee after November 6, 2026 - $500 

Fire Inspection Fee

A $233 Fire Inspection Fee applies if the Fire Departmentis required to check for safety. 

How to apply

  1. Complete Application - Fill out the Residential Rental License Application Form.
  2. Application Review - Your application will be reviewed for completeness and eligibility.
  3. Payment Instructions - If your application is approved, you will receive an email with details on how to submit the required fee.

Please note: Every licensee and property is subject to a random inspection to ensure compliance.

What happens if you break the rules 

If landlords don’t follow the rules, the Town may: 

  • Issue warnings, orders or fines 

  • Add demerit points 

  • Charge penalties ($1,000 to $3,000)
