GTA West Transportation Corridor

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is proposing a new 59-kilometre highway in the northwest Greater Toronto Area.

The proposed new highway, which would be named Highway 413, would connect highway 400 to the highway 401/407 interchange area running through Vaughan, Caledon, Brampton and Halton Hills.

The GTA West corridor would include a four-to-six lane 400-series highway, separate infrastructure dedicated for transit and passenger stations, as well as intelligent transportation features and truck parking.

In August 2020 the Province of Ontario announced a preferred route for the GTA West Transportation Corridor, which consists of the route and interchange locations (map).

The province is currently conducting an environmental assessment of the project. The EA is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

About the Environmental Assessment

The GTA West Transportation Corridor Route Planning and Environmental Assessment Study consists of two stages:

Stage 1

Stage 1 of the study considered all transportation modes and their ability to address the future transportation demands by 2031. The outcome of Stage 1 was a multimodal Transportation Development Strategy. This strategy made recommendations for optimizing the existing transportation network, improvements to non-roadway transportation modes such as transit and rail, widening of existing highways, and a new transportation corridor.

Stage 2

Stage 2 was initiated in early 2014 to build upon the recommendations from the first stage. Stage 2 is focusing on identifying the route and developing the preliminary design for the new multimodal transportation corridor. The new corridor will extend from Highway 400 (between Kirby Road and King-Vaughan Road) in the east to the Highway 401/407 ETR interchange area in the west, and will feature a 400-series highway, a transitway, and potential goods movement priority features.
