This Fire Prevention Week, Caledon Fire & Emergency Services reminds residents that “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” This year’s focus is to educate residents about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. Fire Prevention Week will run October 6 to 12, 2019.

“Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said Fire Chief Darryl Bailey. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”

In a typical home fire, there is as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

Safety Tips
Fire and smoke can spread quickly, so be prepared in advance with these simple steps:

  • Assess the needs of everyone in your home, such as small children or older adults
  • Have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside or inside all sleeping areas
  • Identify two-ways out, if possible (doors and windows) and make sure they work
  • When the smoke alarm sounds, assign someone to help those who need assistance
  • Practice your home fire escape plan and choose a safe meeting place outside to call 911

During Fire Prevention Week, a host of events and activities will take place in Caledon such as:

  • A “Fire Prevention Week” assembly at St. Evan Catholic Elementary School
  • Grand Opening of the new Bolton Fire Station
  • New Bolton Fire Station Open House – Pancake Breakfast: October 12, 9 – 11:30 a.m., 14002 Highway 50
