May 25, 2021 Town Council Meeting Highlights

Community Highlights

  • The Town is making aging in place a priority with the approval of the 2021-2031 Age-Friendly Caledon Action Plan to focus on meeting the needs of an aging population. The Plan outlines actions that will help residents maintain their independence as they age.  live safely, enjoy good health and stay actively involved in the community.   • Gypsy Moths have made quite an appearance in Caledon and throughout Ontario. Council is taking action to help residents and manage the issues associated with the spread of the insect within the Town. 
  • The Town has retained the services of Wilton Consulting Group to conduct a study of existing agricultural trends within the Town to help inform the development of long-range agricultural planning policies to 2051 as part of the Future Caledon Official Plan Review.
  • Town Council selected the 2021 recipients for the Community Green Fund supporting community environmental projects, and the Designated Heritage Property Grant Program for the maintenance and restoration of heritage properties. Learn more on the Town’s website.
  • Glenn Burke, a resident of Caledon, shared a tragic experience that he went through in October 2020. He expressed sincere gratitude to Caledon Fire & Emergency Services and Peel Paramedics for their quick response and saving his life.

Advocacy Updates

  • At the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference in August, Council will meet with several Provincial Ministers to continue to advocate for priorities related to Broadband Connectivity, Infrastructure Management, Bolton Special Policy Area, Local Planning Equity, Aggregate Site Rehabilitation, and Transportation Planning.
  • Council, through its support of the Township of Brock’s is requesting Health Canada enact legislation to better support local governments with land use management and enforcement issues as they relate to Cannabis Production and Processing.
  • The Province issued a Ministerial Zoning Order designating lands at Humber Station Road and King Street for a future Caledon GO Rail station site. Staff are working with the Ministry of Transportation, Metrolinx, the Region of Peel, and the Region of York to have the GO Rail Line in service by 2031.

Financial Highlights

  • The Town’s 2020 Audited Financial Statements were approved and are available on the Town’s website.
  • The 2020 year-end actuals are in and the Town is showing a 2020 operating surplus of $3,375,114.
  • The final 2021 property tax rates were set, and tax bills will be mailed out the first week of June. Payments are to be made in two installments (July 8 and September 2, 2021). The Town continues to help taxpayers who are facing difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, please visit caledon.ca/tax.
