April 27, 2021 Town Council Meeting Highlights 

COVID-19 Update

  • The Region of Peel is currently experiencing its highest rate of positive cases, continuously causing a strain on the health care system, particularly Intensive Care Units (ICU’s).
  • Additional measures have been put in place to address workplace transmissions.
  • The Region is meeting its vaccination targets, administering approximately 100,000 doses per week.

Advocacy Updates

  • Caledon Council is urging the Provincial and Federal governments to amend the eligibility requirements and provide financial assistance to small businesses who are currently ineligible for several of the COVID-19 small business support programs.

Corporate Highlights

  • Council appointed Don Robb, James Pountney, Sarah Clarkson, and Gerald Gorman as members of the Downtown Bolton Task Force to assist in the implementation of the Downtown Bolton Revitalization Plan.
  • Staff have been directed to establish a destination management plan that emphasizes a balanced approach to tourism in Caledon that considers cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability.
  • Council adopted an Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendments to reflect changes to the Cannabis Act, establishing standards to permit cannabis and hemp-related uses in industrial, agricultural and rural areas.

Financial Highlights

  • A public meeting for the Area-Specific Development Charges By-law and Background Study, regarding the Coleraine Drive Stormsewer will be held on May 26, 2021, for more information and how to participate, please visit caledon.ca/notices
  • Staff are exploring options for a Resident Internet Rebate Program. Options will be presented to Council on May 4.

Community Highlights

  • Caledon Council passed its most ambitious Resilient Caledon Community Climate Change Action Plan which aims to achieve a net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, containing over 60 actions and tasks to help the Town meet greenhouse gas reduction targets and assists in the preparation of any local impacts relating to climate change.
  • Staff provided an update on the status of the Future Caledon – Official Plan Review project. The presentation is available for the public to view on the Town’s website.
  • Council received an update on the Affordable Housing Strategy and is seeking input from members of the public. Complete the Affordable Housing Survey before it closes on May 4, 2021. 
  • To help address safety concerns the Town of Caledon has increased enforcement measures with respect to ‘no parking’ and ‘no stopping’ along several scenic roads.
  • Staff will be looking into regulations that will restrict local pet stores from selling animals from illegal domesticated animal breeding facilities.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Town-led events will be postponed until September 2021 and the following events traditionally held in-person have been cancelled, including Community Recognition Night, Cheers Caledon, Caledon Day and the Caledon Charity Golf Tournament.
