Bulletin No. 3: Marital Status, Family Structure, Households & Dwellings

The following bulletin is a highlight of 2001 Census data on Marital Status, Family Structure, Households and Dwellings for Caledon as published by Statistics Canada on October 22, 2002.

Marital Status

In 2001, 63% (24,640 out of 38,995) of Caledon’s population 15 years and over were married, the same percentage as 1996. At the same time, the percentage of single individuals living in Caledon remained the same at 25% (9,825 out of 38,995).

Family Structure, Households and Dwellings

The 2001 Census counted 14,710 families in Caledon, up 29% from 1996. There were 10,060 (68% of the total) families with children at home and 4,650 (32% of the total) families without children at home. These percentages are unchanged from 1996. In 2001, the average number of children living at home per census family was 1.3 and unchanged from 1996.

The average number of persons per census family was 3.2 in 2001, compared to 3.3 in 1996. Between 1996 and 2001, the number of lone-parent families increased by 57% or 500 to 1,385.

Of the total occupied private dwellings (16,110), owned dwellings accounted for 14,490, up from 10,925 in 1996. The number of rented dwellings decreased by 30 units to 1,615 between 1996 and 2001.
