2007 Environmental Action
Report
|
|

|
Demonstrating leadership in progressive
environmental stewardship, the Town released its first Environmental Action
Report in 2007. The Report highlighted the Town’s environmental achievements
between 2005 and mid-2007, with an outlook to future initiatives. In 2005, Council endorsed the Town’s first
formal environmental strategy - the
Environmental Progress Action Plan. As the Report illustrates, significant progress has been made in
each of the plan’s seven priority areas.

Council approved the Town’s Environmental
Progress Action Plan in 2005 whichcontains environmental initiatives for the Town to enhance its commitment
to preserving and enhancing Caledon’s environment. The Plan reflects consultations with Councillors, local
environmental groups and municipal staff. This is the first iteration of the Plan and is considered a
living document which will continue to evolve in response to municipal and
community priorities.
The comprehensive Plan was
produced in consultation with municipal staff, community environmental groups
and other local stakeholders, augmenting extensive research of municipal
best practices. This work led to the
development of seven environmental priority areas:
· Air Quality · Climate Change · Energy · A Green Economy · Environmental
Awareness · Sustainable Planning · Community Capacity
Although the Plan
emphasizes corporate operations, many of the proposed actions will positively
impact the general community. In
recognition of the contribution and commitment of local environmental groups,
a section of the Plan is devoted to supporting and strengthening community
capacity which led to a recommendation for a Caledon "Green Fund."
If
you would like more information on the Plan, please contact Sara. Copies of the Plan are available for $25
(black and white) or $35 (colour).

Greenest Town in Ontario
|

|
The Town of Caledon, with a large
geographic area and population of 55,000 people, prides itself on maintaining
a sustainable balance of community, environmental and development initiatives
in the context of an extensive urban and rural environment. The Town is well respected for its
progressive approach on “green” matters as recognized recently by being named
the co-recipient of the “TVO Greenest Town in Ontario” Award in 2003.
The award was granted to Caledon
because of a number of its progressive environmental initiatives. These
include excellent countryside planning, the Healthy Horticultural Landscapes
Bylaw, strong community involvement, membership in the Partners for Climate
Protection Program and extensive waste diversion programs, in addition to the
staff position of an Environmental Progress Officer (EPO) in the Fall 2004.
