Caledon Environmental Advisory Committee (CEAC)
Introduction to CEAC
Who We Are
In 1996, the Town of Caledon appointed 24 local volunteers
as the founding members of the Caledon Environmental Advisory Committee. Since
then, CEAC has been instrumental in promoting progressive environmental
approaches such as the Woodlands By-law, the Village Studies, and the Healthy
Horticultural By-Law.
Our Missions & Vision
Our mission is to advise and assist the Council and
citizens of Caledon in the protection, enhancement, restoration, management and
appreciation of our common natural heritage and in ensuring that our
communities are planned for environmental sustainability, health and respect
for all life.
Our Vision
CEAC will continue to have a widely recognized and respected
reputation with Council and the community for proactively addressing key
environmental issues.
The committee will continue to be influential in providing practical and timely
advice to Council in an unbiased manner based on objective research.
CEAC’s Guiding
Principles
Sustainability:
the sustainable integrity of ecosystems, both natural and human, will be a
primary consideration in all activities and decision making processes
Carrying Capacity: the natural limits of
ecosystems must be respected and cumulative environmental effects of
development assessed
Mutual Support: ecosystem integrity and
sustainable, social, physical and economic health are interdependent
Long Term Perspective: the effects of
decisions and trends will be considered in a time perspective of seven
generations to assure precaution, wise use and equity
Innovation: positive, responsible and
creative environmental stewardship and change will be fostered
Stewardship: Caledon residents are
acknowledged as important stewards of the environment and as sources of
information about the history and current condition of eco-systems
CEAC Perspective: CEAC shall strive to bring
a broad, multi-disciplinary and objective perspective to its activities and
shall remain adaptable and responsible to new issues and challenges
What CEAC Does
CEAC meets monthly as a whole (as well as in sub-committees) to prepare briefs
and recommendations. CEAC reports directly to Council by offering advice on:
Protection of ecosystems and ecosystem integrity both within and related to
Caledon
Sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable natural resources, such as
aggregates, forestry and agriculture
Development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of municipal
environmental policies
Information needs and new strategies regarding environmental sustainability
Monitoring ecosystem health and recommendations for specific studies
Preparation of guidelines for environmentally related initiatives
CEAC also:
Prepares an annual work plan and status report
Conducts research, works with other environmental groups and has developed a
public education program to support environmental awareness
Membership
Caledon has
amazing environmental attributes and it takes people like you to keep it that
way.
CEAC’s strength lies in its membership. While
CEAC does not have an annual membership drive, there is, as with all
organizations, a turnover of members, such that openings for new members do
become available.
To find out if we are recruiting, check the
local papers or call the Town of Caledon’s Planning and Development Department.
