Municipal Numbering

Municipal numbers help emergency services reach you in the event of an emergency. One of the most common delays in emergency response times is that emergency services can't find your house number. Please make sure that your number stands out even if your exterior lights are off at night.

Municipal Numbering By-law and Guidelines

We issue municipal numbers as per our Municipal Numbering By-law and Guidelines, which outline when a municipal number is required, how a municipal number is issued, and the style and requirements for a municipal number.

A staff report is being brought forward to Planning and Development Committee on September 22, 2020 to be ratified by Council on September 29, 2020, proposing amendments to the By-law and Guidelines.

When is a green municipal number sign required?

Green municipal number signs are required when emergency services staff may not be able to see your municipal number due to distance or due to the number of buildings on your property. Green municipal number signs are often required on rural residential properties, agricultural properties, vacant lots, and estate residential subdivisions. 

When a green municipal number sign must be installed, you are responsible for any associated fees, including:

  • Creating the green municipal number sign;
  • Providing the municipal number pole; and
  • Installing the green municipal number sign and pole.

 Fees can be paid by:

  • Phone for credit card payments;
  • The front counter of the Community Services Department (Planning and Development Section) by cash, debit card, credit card or cheque (payable to The Corporation of the Town of Caledon); or,
  • Mail by cash or cheque (payable to The Corporation of the Town of Caledon).

Replacing a green municipal number sign

You can ask for a replacement number subject to a fee. Please email us and make sure to include:

  • Your property's roll number (you can find this number on your tax bill)
  • The issued municipal number that you would like replaced

If you're going to replace your address pole, and if you'd like us to install the replacement as well, these services will be at your cost.

Once you've paid the required fees, we will order your replacement. If you have only bought a replacement sign and/or pole, we will contact you when the items are ready for pick-up at the Planning and Development section, Community Services department at Town Hall.

If you have requested that we install your number and/or pole, we'll start the installation.

Changing your municipal number

We do not usually permit changing municipal numbers unless we issued a number in error or as part of a development application. In these cases, you may receive compensation.

Vacant lots

You can request a municipal number for a vacant lot. Please email us or drop off the following information to Planning and Development Section, Community Services Department at Town Hall:

  • A copy of an aerial site plan that illustrates the driveway or entrance location, whether this driveway or entrance exists or is proposed, and setbacks from the entrance to the nearest property line
  • Your property's roll number (you can find this number on your tax bill)
  • Confirmation if there is an existing municipal number at a different entrance or driveway on the same property
  • If you'd also like to buy a pole and/or if you'd like us to install the number as well (these services will be at your cost)

Once you've paid all of the required fees and we've approved your entrance, we'll confirm and finalize your municipal number.

We'll notify you as well as the Region of Peel, Enbridge, Hydro One and Canada Post of the municipal number.
