Designated Heritage Property Grant Program

We are committed to preserving the heritage and history of our community for generations to come. In order to promote heritage revitalization projects, we offer a grant program to help fund conservation of properties that are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. We will match 50% of the eligible cost of the renovation, up to a maximum of $6,000 for General Conservation Projects and $15,000 for Special Projects, subject to available funds. A maximum of two (2) Special Project grants will awarded annually.

The grants are intended to assist designated property owners with small to mid-size conservation projects that focus on the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing heritage attributes or the restoration of heritage attributes that would contribute to the cultural heritage value of the property.

The program runs every spring, with a second round in the fall subject to available funds. Review our Heritage Grant Guidelines to help you through the application process.

 Apply for a grant

We encourage you to contact us prior to submitting a grant application to make sure that the proposed work is eligible for funding. There are two application deadlines per year: Spring and Fall (funding permitting). The Spring 2024 deadline is April 15, 2024 at 4:30pm. 

If your project is eligible, you will need to complete and submit a Designated Heritage Property Grant Program application form together with all required application materials.

The following information and documents are required:

  • The application form;
  • Your name, address and phone number;
  • The type of heritage designation of your property;
  • A brief description of the conservation project (include photos, drawings and plans);
  • An explanation of how the project will conserve the heritage attributes of your property;
  • A description of the methods, materials and techniques to be used;
  • Two quotes from heritage contractors who have experience in the proposed work (re-pointing, etc.); and,
  • Your signature.

Owners are encouraged to select suppliers, contractors and/or tradespeople with demonstrated experience with heritage properties. Contact us if you are experiencing difficulties retaining a heritage contractor.

 Grant eligibility

To be eligible for the Designated Heritage Property Grant, your project must conserve the heritage attributes of the property. The property must be:

  • Located in the Town of Caledon;
  • Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act:
    •  as an individual property under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act

OR

Your property is not eligible if it is:

  • Not designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act
  • Identified as a non-contributing property in a Heritage Conservation District designated under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act;
  • Approved for a Heritage Property Tax Rebate for the same taxation year.
  • In tax arrears;
  • Subject to compliance and enforcement orders issued by the Town;
  • Owned by any level of government (except where a non-profit or community group is responsible for the maintenance of the property); 

Eligible work does not include:

  • Alterations, renovations, or repairs that do not conserve the heritage attributes of the property;
  • An extension or addition to a designated property that is of contemporary construction; or,
  • Interior renovations, unless interior heritage attributes are identified in the property’s designation by-law.
Grant completion requirements

You must complete the eligible work within three (3) years of the grant approval date to receive funding. Once a site inspection by heritage staff confirms that the correct work has been completed and proof of payment is submitted for the work, the grant is then awarded.
Frequency of grant

You are eligible to receive two (2) grants per year, subject to available funding. However, if you receive two grants in one year you cannot apply the following year.
